B.K. Kirkland B.K. Kirkland
When it comes to old school R&B, B.K. Kirkland is the man and he features this special time in music history, from 1975-1990, on The Groove - XM 64. Kirkland began his radio career in Columbus, Ohio, in 1975; but by 1976, he returned to his New York home where he replaced radio legend Frankie Crocker at WBLS. Shortly after that he was made assistant program director and his programming career began. His ideas and musical savvy scored the highest afternoon numbers in WBLS history reaching two million people per week. In 1978 he spent a year doing evenings at "Disco 92", another highly recognized station in the number one market.

Looking for a new challenge he accepted the program directorship of The Quiet Storm in San Francisco. TQS has been acknowledged as the forerunner of NAC/smooth jazz formats. He was made west coast program director and took the format to Los Angeles and Detroit. While at Inner City Broadcasting he held the position of vice president and national program director. In 1983 he received a Gallery award as one of the top 100 radio personalities in America.

In 1990 he moved to Washington, DC, as program director of Howard University's station, but in 2000, when XM offered BK the ultimate challenge to take old school R&B to the next level, he responded to the call.
