How did you get the gig at MTV?
I'd been an intern at WNBC, home of Don Imus and later, Howard Stern. One hot day in July I stopped by their offices to say hello to some friends when the subject of this new cable channel came up. At some point someone in the office turned to me and said the words that would impact my life forever: "That's what you should do Martha, you should be a VJ." It was crazy. It made sense. I spent my college years doing two things-TV commercials and working at the college radio station. It was the perfect combination! I was way into music, and had lots of on-camera experience. Within hours I was auditioning at the studio and the rest is history.
Were there any interviews that didn't go well? Tell us about it!
Oh God, there's an awful David Lee Roth interview floating around out there, I call it my "dead fish face" interview. I was thinking, "I'm not going to let that DLR come in here and joke around and do his shtick and make a monkey out of me", so I was determinedly dead-pan. Dave must have been thinking, "Who in the world did they stick me with?" Turns out he didn't make a monkey out of me after all... I did it all by myself!
