For 40 years, I've traveled around America listening to the stories Americans tell about their lives. I was always moved, and so I wanted to create a show where you can hear some of them too." - Sen. Bill Bradley.

What You

American Voices 4/20/08 lineup

  • First, Kyle Maynard was born without hands and feet. His arms end at his elbows; his legs end at his knees. He’s 22 years old now and is 4 feet tall. Growing up, Kyle wanted to be an athlete and he was determined. He went on to become a wrestling champion!

To find out more about Kyle Maynard, you can read his new book No Excuses.

  • Then, for this week’s StoryCorps, Joe Hunter, who was a road manager for Ray Charles, talks about how he met and married his wife, a backup singer.

You can record your own story too. To learn how, go to StoryCorps.net.

  • Next, it’s our Famous American Voices Quiz. We’ll play recordings of famous Americans and see if one of our listeners can identify the voices. This time, Tuesday Johnson, from El Paso Texas, takes the quiz.

  • And for this week’s installment of our Favorite Sound in America Series, author Cornelia Funke is back to tell us abut her favorite sound in the country.
